Abstract
A moulding composition having improved toughness comprises a mixture of 100 parts mouldable polystyrene with 1-50 parts of a chemically heterogeneous copolymer of 30-90 per cent of butadiene and 70-10 per cent of styrene. The heterogeneous copolymer exhibits a wide variation in the ratio of butadiene units to styrene units in the individual molecules and may be prepared, for example, by an aqueous emulsion method in which at least 40 per cent of one of the monomers, preferably styrene, is withheld until 40 to 60 per cent of the other monomer has polymerized. The polymerization may be performed batchwise or the styrene added continuously or incrementally. The composition may be made by blending the copolymer, in dry powdered form, with granulated polystyrene on a rotary blender or rolling mill or by mixing less than 50 per cent of polystyrene latex with the copolymer, drying and blending with additional granular polystyrene. Dyes, pigments, lubricants, fillers, plasticisers and stabilizers may be included in the composition.
