Abstract
Chlorine-containing polymeric products are made by mixing a chlorine-containing polymer with an allyl or methallyl monomer that is non-volatile under conditions of use and has a plasticizing action on the polymer and curing the mixture by means of heat-treatment in the presence of a free-radical polymerization catalyst of a defined type (see below), the product being a graft copolymer and, when an allyl or methallyl monomer having a functionality greater than 2 is used, being also cross-linked. The free-radical catalysts used are those which, at a concentration of 0,01% by weight, will not accelerate the initial rate of polymerization of pure styrene at 120 DEG C. by more than 50%, but are effective as free-radical catalysts for styrene at some temperature within the range of 120 DEG to 250 DEG C., which will initiate the polymerization of allyl and methallyl compounds and are substantially non-volatile at room temperature. Specified catalysts are dicumyl peroxide and the diphenyl ethanes of Specification 864,675. Chlorine-containing polymers specified are polyvinyl chloride and vinyl-vinylidene chloride copolymers. Allyl and methallyl compounds specified are monoallylmono-octyl sebacate, diallyl phthalate, diallyl adipate, diallyl maleate, triallyl trimellitate, triallyl cyanurate, allyl crotonate, allyl acrylate, allyl phosphate, allyl carbonate, triallyl citrate, methallyl ethers and esters and low molecular weight polyesters containing allyl and maleic groups. Also present during polymerization may be plasticizers, e.g. esters of phthalic, adipic, sebacic, glycollic and phosphoric acids, stabilizers, e.g. dibutyl tin bis (monobutyl maleate), dibutyl tin dilaurate and dibutyl tin maleate, and pigments and fillers, e.g. carbon black and glass fibre. If desired the monomer-polymer mix may be given a partial cure prior to the heat-treatment either by storing the mix at room temperature or by exposing it to ultra-violet light in the presence of a photocatalyst such as p-chlorobenzophenone. In a modification of the process the heat-treatment may be dispensed with altogether and curing effected by storage at room temperature for several days.
