Abstract

The transparency of polyethylene is increased by admixing it with a polymerizable compound containing at least two non-conjugated ethylenic double bonds, and then polymerizing the compound in the presence of a free-radical initiator at a temperature above the crystalline melting point of the polyethylene, e.g. within the range of 100 DEG to 170 DEG C. Free-radical initiators specified are dicumyl peroxide, ditert.-butyl peroxide and diphenyl ethanes of the formula <FORM:0908224/IV(a)/1> in which R1 to R4 each represent hydrogen or an alkyl group, at least two being alkyl groups, and in which the benzene residues A and B may contain substituents, e.g. symmetrical diphenyl tetramethyl ethane. Unsaturated compounds specified are diallyl succinate, adipate, sebacate, phthalate, fumarate, maleate, oxyethylene carbonate and thiophosphonate, triallyl aconitate, borate, citrate, cyanurate, pyromellitate, phosphate aluminate and titanate, pyrogallol tris-(allyl carbonate), tetraalyl benzene tetracarboxylate, tris-(allyl phenyl) phosphate, allyl cinnamate and allyl alkacrylates. Also included in the monomer-polymer mixtures may be chlorinated paraffins, epoxide resins, butyl rubber, chlorinated polyethylene carbon black and antimony oxide. The polyethylene, which may be of the high, intermediate or low density variety, is initially in powder or granular form, but after mixing with the unsaturated monomer is formed into a sheet for curing.
