Abstract

830,901. Ultra-violet filters. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 27, 1957 [June 22, 1956], No. 19394/56. Class 97(1) [Also in Groups VIII, XV and XXVIII] A process for laminating together solid laminae of a thermoplastic material produced by the polymerization of one or more polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated compounds is characterized in that in order to reduce discoloration due to exposure to ultra-violet radiation an ultraviolet absorber is incorporated in the external laminae on each surface of the laminate that is to be exposed to such radiation, and preferably in the surface laminae only, but not in all the laminae. If only one surface is to be exposed to ultra-violet radiation, .the ultra-violet absorber may be incorporated in that surface lamina only. The laminate may comprise flat sheets, or shaped or curved sheets or angled sections or tubes may be produced by laminating together laminae of suitable configurations. The polymeric material may be polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with eg. vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride, polystyrene, a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer, or a butadiene - acrylonitrile copolymer. The ultra-violet absorber may be phenyl salicylate, resorcinol disalicylate, resorcinol mono- or di-benzoate, benzyl benzoate, stilbene, beta - methyl - umbelliferene, 4 - methyl - umbelliference benzoate, 2 : 4 - dihydroxybenzophenone, or 2 - hydroxy - 4 -methoxy - benzophenone.
