Abstract
Acetylene is produced by the partial oxidation of methane in a combustion chamber (see Division F4) having a porous refractory wall 1 through which is percolated superheated steam and/or oxygen to reduce the tendency for carbon to be deposited on the walls of the chamber. The wall 1 is made of alumina, magnesia, zirconia or " carborundum " (Registered Trade Mark) and has a frusto-conical inner surface lined with a platinum rhodium alloy gauze 3 to prevent erosion of the refractory. Steam at between 400 DEG and 600 DEG C. or a mixture of oxygen and steam below 400 DEG C. is fed to an annular chamber 6 between a casing 5 and the wall 1 and percolates therein into the combustion chamber. A preheated mixture of methane and oxidizing gas is introduced into the combustion chamber from burner tubes 15 surrounded by annular spaces 34 for the supply of further oxidizing gas. The gases emerging from the other end of the combustion chamber are cooled by water issuing from annular slots 10 in a target member 9. Specification 951,099 is referred to. <PICT:0951100/C3/1>
