Abstract
950,324. Retractable aircraft undercarriages. DOWTY ROTOL Ltd. Aug. 29, 1961 [Sept. 5, 1960; Sept. 7, 1960], Nos. 30594/60 and 30837/60. Headings B7G and B7W. A V.T.O.L. aircraft has a retractable alighting gear comprising a leg 15 which is retained in the " down " position by hydraulic lock 20 and abutment 21 and is retracted by a jack 23 to be locked in the " up " position by hydraulic lock 22; two levers 25 connected by a stirrup 26 engage projections 17 on leg 15, so that in the retracted position the leg acts as part of the framework of the fuselage or wing 12. The locks and jacks are operated in conjunction with other aircraft controls to ensure that the retraction of legs 15 takes place before the aircraft changes from vertical to horizontal flight or before a predetermined forward speed is attained.
