Abstract

949,112. Endless conveyers. BAKER PERKINS HOLDINGS Ltd. Jan. 16, 1962 [Jan. 16, 1961], No. 1750/61. Heading B8A. The speed of a conveyer chain 1 over a length of which the links are collapsed into contact with one another in zig-zag or concertina fashion is less than that of the remainder in the ratio of the length when collapsed to that when extended. The slow-motion over a region 5 enables an operator to secure flat articles of laundry to cross bars (not shown) extending from the conveyer chain. Sprockets 2, 3 which carry the conveyer chain are connected by a chain drive 4, and a further chain 18 which is driven from a sprocket 19 on the shaft 20 of the main driving sprocket 2 drives a pair of sprockets 16, 17. The conveyer chain 1 leaving the driving sprocket 2 is under compression as it passes to the bottom of the region 5 and is therefore supported by guide surfaces 7, 8 which diverge to form a V-shaped space 12 within which the links of the chain can assume the collapsed configuration. The sprockets 16, 17 facilitate the collapsing of the links which pass upwardly between guides 6, 7.
