Abstract

948,990. Voltage regulation. COMMUNICATIONS PATENTS Ltd. Feb. 21,1962, No.6656/62. Heading G3X. A voltage regulator for supplying current to a load 17 comprises a discharge tube 10, having its anode connected over a resistor 11 to a positive potential 13 and its cathode connected in series with a resistor 18 to a negative potential 19, and a rectifier 15 connected as shown in series with the tube 10 to a point of potential 16 intermediate the potentials of 13 and 19. In operation, at the instant switch 12 is closed the tube is connected across 13 and 19, and the initial voltage V1 + V2 causes the tube discharge current to flow whereby rectifier 15 becomes conductive; the circuit then acts as conventional voltage regulator in which the cathode of tube 10 is connected directly to terminal 16, i.e. the voltage V2 acts only as a priming voltage which is added to voltage V1 to initiate the discharge. A number of discharge tubes connected in parallel may replace the tube 10, or a number may be connected in series with the rectifier (Fig. 2, not shown).
