Abstract
<PICT:0948647/C1/1> <PICT:0948647/C1/2> <PICT:0948647/C1/3> A process for producing a sintered body from a composition comprising finely divided glass, preferably soft lead glass, and more than 8% but less than 12% by weight finely divided aluminium oxide, includes the steps of placing the composition in a shaped pressure mould, subjecting the mould to at least one pressing operation and to at least one sintering operation. The glass/alumina composition is preferably of uniform particle size and usefully 10 microns. Sintering may take place in a nitrogen atmosphere or a reducing flame at about 1200 DEG C., after which the mould is immediately pressed for a second time. The invention also includes attaching metal parts to the sintered body, wherein after the first pressing and sintering the formed body is immersed in a borax solution, dried and re-sintered. The metal inserts which may be wires are preferably copper coated or copper foil inserts may be used between the metal and the glass. The second sintering may be effected by radio-frequency heating. The metal to glass seal produced is claimed to be vacuum tight and employs alloys of iron, chromium and/or nickel. The order of assembly and dipping in borax may be raised. The invention is particularly described with reference to the vacuum tube components illustrated.
