Abstract

948,384. Making piston rings. RAMSEY CORPORATION. May 29, 1961 [June 6, 1960; April 25, 1961], No. 19314/61. Heading B3A. [Also in Division F2] A piston ring 20 having a porous wearresistant metal band 21 in its periphery is made by forming a groove 22 in the periphery, depositing the wear-resistant metal in the groove and removing excess metal. The wearresistant metal, which may be molybdenum or aluminium trioxide, is preferably deposited by spraying. As shown in Fig. 7, a number of rings 20, which may be of cast iron, are first clamped in end-to-end relationship on an arbor comprising rollers 31, 33 and a nut 36 and bolt 37, peripheral grooves are cut in the rings and the exposed surfaces are then covered with molybdenum 50 by spraying in a molten form from a spray gun nozzle 49. The surplus molybdenum is then removed by grinding, Fig. 13, so that the lands 52, 53 are of the piston ring material. The side faces 38, 39 of the ring may be coated with molybdenum, aluminium trioxide or chromium.
