Abstract
A condensed isopropyl silicate is made by adding gradually to SiCl4 a mixture of water and isopropyl alcohol, the amount of water added being from 0.75 to 1 mol per mol of SiCl4 and the amount of alcohol added being in excess of that stoichiometrically required to replace those chlorine atoms of the SiCl4 with which the water is insufficient to react, refluxing the mixture and removing excess alcohol by distillation. In examples (1) a mixture of anhydrous isopropyl alcohol and water was gradually added to SiCl4 and the resulting mixture was refluxed for 1 hour and left overnight, unreacted alcohol was then removed by distillation up to 100 DEG C., leaving a crude product having a SiO2 content of 38.05%; further distillation up to 200 DEG C. removed the orthosilicate content, leaving a mixture of isopropyl polysilicates having a SiO2 content of 38.5%; (2) the process was similar to (1) except that the reflux time was increased to 4 hours, resulting in products having SiO2 contents of 39.5% and 40.7% respectively. Uses: for binding refractory powders in the preparation of moulds for the casting of metals, as described in Specification 948,132.
