Abstract

Dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate is prepared by mixing dimethylaminoethanol and an alkyl methacrylate having 1-4 carbon atoms in the alkyl group in a ratio of from 1 : 1.3 to 1 : 2.5, heating the mixture to 80-95 DEG C. in the absence of an organic solvent, adding an alkali metal alkoxide catalyst in amount sufficient to supply from 0.2 to 1 mol. per cent of said metal based on dimethylaminoethanol, heating under reflux to effect trans-esterification, distilling off an azeotrope of alkyl methacrylate and lower alkanol as it is formed, and adding further catalyst in portions at a rate of from 0.4 to 1 mol. per cent per hour based on dimethylaminoethanol taken. The preferred catalyst is sodium methoxide, but there may be used also sodium dimethylaminoethoxide, lithium and potassium methoxides and dimethylaminoethoxides, sodium ethoxide and potassium butoxide. Reduced pressures may be used, and an anti-polymerization agent may be added. The reaction may be carried out in an inert atmosphere, e.g. nitrogen. The final product may be separated by distillation of the reaction mixture, with or without prior filtration.
