Abstract
1461828 Chloromethyl methyl ether DOW CHEMICAL CO 19 July 1974 [19 July 1973] 32123/74 Heading C2C Chloromethyl methyl ether is prepared by (a) pretreating CH 3 OH, CH 2 (OCH 3 ) 2 or a liquid mixture thereof with HCl under anhydrous conditions, (b) adding HCHO at a controlled rate and temperature below 45 C. together with sufficient anhydrous HCl to establish and maintain an HCl-saturated reaction mixture until 0À6-1À0 equivalent of HCHO per equivalent of CH 3 OH has been added and (c) recovering ClCH 2 = CH 3 from the reaction mixture. The liquid pretreated in step (a) may be a recycle mixture of CH 3 OH and CH 2 (OCH 3 ) 2 . Preferably the liquid pretreated is saturated with HCl prior to addition of HCHO. The addition of HCHO, preferably as paraformaldehyde, is advantageously effected at -10 to + 30 C.
