Abstract

Tetraethylorthosilicate is partially hydrolysed with 0.08 to 0.20 mol. (i.e. approx. 0.7 to 1.7% by weight) of water per mol. of silicate. Preferably the silicate is used in admixture with ethanol with which the water may be mixed prior to the hydrolysis. This hydrolysis may be applied to the crude reaction product of SiCl4 and at least the stoichiometric amount of ethanol; whether anhydrous ethanol or ethanol containing less than 0.5% of water is used for reaction with SiCl4, the resulting product is hydrolysed with water or additional water within the above molar range to yield, after removal of HCl and ethanol, a mixture of tetraethylorthosilicate and hexaethoxydisiloxane, which may be separated by fractional distillation under reduced pressure, and a high-boiling residue containing an average of 3.5 Si atoms per molecule. An example is given.
