Abstract

947,621. Liquid fuel burners; oxygen lances. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Dec. 6, 1962 [Dec. 6, 1961], No. 43686/61. Headings F4B and F4T. A combined oxygen jet and liquid fuel burner for use in metal treatment comprises a cylindrical body 10 terminating in a nozzle block 11 provided with a central convergentdivergent bore 12 and a plurality of orifices 15 around the central bore and a liquid fuel nozzle 25 adapted to be moved within the body 10 between a retracted position in which it is spaced from the nozzle block 11 to permit the flow of oxygen through the central bore 12 and in which the central bore of the liquid fuel nozzle itself is blocked by a resilient stop 28, and an advanced position in which the liquid fuel nozzle co-operates with the convergent portion of the central bore 12 of the nozzle block 11 to provide a narrow passage 41 through which oxygen passes to atomize the liquid fuel from the liquid fuel nozzle, movement of the liquid fuel nozzle operating means for closing the plurality of orifices 15 when the liquid fuel nozzle is retracted and opening them when it is advanced. The liquid fuel nozzle 25 is mounted on the end of a tube 18 threaded at 23 to the inner end of a fixed liquid fuel supply tube 21. The resilient stop 28 is disposed on the end of a spigot 27 on the end of the fixed tube 21. The means for closing the orifices 15 comprises an annular block 39 connected by springs 38 to an outer sleeve 35 threaded at 33 to an inner sleeve 32 connected to the tube 18. A pin 36 on the body 10 projects into a slot 37 in the outer sleeve 35 to prevent rotation of the latter. The threads 23, 33 are of the same hand but of differing pitch so that when the tube 18 is rotated to advance the liquid fuel nozzle 25 the outer sleeve 35 moves backward so that the annular block 39 opens the apertures 15. The movement is stopped by the end of the outer sleeve 35 abutting a flange 16 on the body 10. Oxygen is supplied to the body 10 by inlets 17 in the flange 16 and passes through passages 40 in the inner sleeve 32 to the orifices 15 and to the narrow passage 41 around the fuel nozzle 25. The body is cooled by a water jacket 42. The combined oxygen jet and burner may be used in an open hearth or an electric furnace or in melting small amounts of iron in a ladle or top blown converter.
