Abstract
<PICT:0973521/C6-C7/1> A lance or jet for injecting an inert, reducing or weakly-oxidizing gas in the treatment of molten metals, comprises three coaxial tubes, 10, 12 and 15, which are provided with coarse helical threads 14 and 18 on the outer walls of the enclosed tubes to give good thermal contact between adjacent tubes. The gas is indirectly preheated by radiation from the furnace walls and melt during its sinuous flow path through the inner tube 10, up the annulus in a spiral path between tubes 10 and 12, and down the outer annulus between tubes 12 and 15 prior to injection on to or into the melt. The injection of compressed air for stirring, propane for deoxidation of copper, and hydrocarbons for carburizing ferrous metals are particularly referred to.
