Abstract

947,597. Cooling I.C. engines. KLOCKNERHUMBOLDT-DEUTZ A.G. Sept. 1, 1960 [Sept. 22, 1959], No. 30245/60. Heading FIB. In a cooling system for an I.C. engine thermostatic means responsive to the exit cooling air temperature activates control means to decrease the cooling air supply as the engine temperature increases through a first range immediately after starting and then actuates the control means to increase the supply of cooling air through a second temperature range as the temperature of the exit cooling air increases beyond a certain value. With increase of temperature, valve 1 is moved leftwards by a rod 3 connected to a thermostat in the exit cooling air stream. When the engine is started liquid is supplied from an auxiliary supply duct 5 through groove 7 and outlet duct 6 to an hydraulic slip coupling driving the blower, the speed of the blower being reduced, due to the restricted flow passages of grooves 8 and 9, as the air temperature increases, until edge 11 coincides with edge 12 when the blower is stopped. As the air temperature further increases the main supply duct 4 supplies duct 6 through groove 10, the speed of the blower rising in correspondence with the rise of air temperature. In a modification groove 9 is omitted and a small rate of cooling air is supplied by an enginedriven fan.
