Abstract

695,730. Cooling-systems for engines. DAIMLERBENZ AKT.-GES. Nov. 28, 1950 [Nov. 28, 1949], No. 29106/50. Class 64 (iii) [Also in Group XXVII] Valves e, f, controlling conduits b, c leading cooling medium (as described, water), passing from an I.C. engine via a conduit a, respectively to a radiator and directly back to the engine or circulating pump, are moved by a thermostat d the datum position of which is adjusted in accordance with engine loading so that the water temperature varies inversely thereto. As shown, the engine throttle valve j is linked to a piston g on which the thermostat d is mounted. Alternatively, the engine suction, as at the throat of a Venturi nozzle in the intake pipe, may act on a spring-loaded piston similarly connected to a thermostat. In either case the conduit c may be dispensed with, the thermostat acting on a single throttling valve in the main cooling water circuit. With a diesel engine the thermostat may be connected to the regulating linkage of the fuel injection pump. Other engine load factors such as output shaft or other torque or the quantity of fuel supplied per unit of time may be used as control factors, and the cooling medium temperature may be controlled by thermostatic regulation of a radiator fan or louvre.
