Abstract

Textile materials of polyamides or acrylonitrile polymers, including copolymers containing at least 85% acrylonitrile, are printed by applying a print paste containing a water-soluble reactive dye and thiourea. The dyes may be of the nitro, azo, phthalocyanine series and may be metal free or contain metal in complex formation. The paste suitably contains 4-10% thiourea and also an acid or a substance which develops acidity on steaming; with polyacrylonitrile materials oxalic or tartaric acid is preferred while with polyamide materials acetic acid or an ammonium salt is preferred. Other known adjurants may also be present, those specified being sodium m-nitrobenzene, sulphonate, ethanol, thiodiglycol sodium chlorate, phenol and the thickening agents starch, ethyl cellulose, locust bean gum, tragacanth, oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsions and especially Nafka crystal gum. The paste may be applied by handblock, screen or roller printing techniques. The prints may be fixed by steaming at atmospheric pressure for 10-30 minutes. Examples are given.
