In viscose spinning, there is added to the viscose or to the coagulating bath one or more amine oxides of the general formula where R 1 , R 2 and R 3 , which may be the same or different, are alkyl, alkoxy or aryl groups. Specified compounds include dimethyl laurylamine oxide, diethyloctylamine oxide, tributylamine oxide, dimethyl butylamine oxide, triosopropylamine oxide, triisooctylamine oxide, methoxyethyl methyl laurylamine oxide, dimethyl stearylamine oxide, dietheyl oleylamine oxide, dimethyl cyclohexylamine oxide, dioyclohexyl methylamine oxide and dimethylphenylamine oxide. In examples, from 0.2- 2 g/1. of an amine oxide is added to viscose which is spun in known manner. Regeneration may be effected in two stages, using a hot dilute acid bath following the coagulating bath. Spinneret incrustation and coagulating bath sedimentation are greatly reduced, and the stretchability of the filaments formed is enhanced. Where matting agents or spinning dyestuffs are added to the viscose, improved dispersion of such substances in the viscose results.
