[Also in Division F1] In an hydraulic pump or motor, circumferentially-spaced grooves 7 and 8 retain pressurized oil bodies which absorb side thrust on the piston. Oil from the cylinder working space is supplied direct to the grooves 7 and via ducts 12a, 12 to the grooves 8. A duct 13, which may connect with an annular piston surface recess, communicates with atmosphere via a duct 16. The grooves 7, 8 may be formed in the cylinder when their inner ends are connected by respective annular cylinder surface recesses fed from the cylinder working space by cylinder borings, and there is an intermediate annular cylinder surface recess connected to atmosphere.
