In a method of rolling high alloy and difficultly workable metals in a multi-roll reversing mill, the leading and trailing ends of the stock to be rolled are formed into a V- shaped beak such that, due to the elastic flexure of the rolls decreasing as the workpiece area lessens, the beak when leaving the rolls is longitudinally tapered, thus permitting the use of a smaller pass when the stock re-enters the pass. Fig. 3 shows how the workpiece ends are tapered after rolling the tapered beaks. A mill suitable for the process is shown, the mill being usable as a four-high mill for roughing, and as a six-high mill when rolls 3, mounted in a supplementary frame 5, are slid into position. The rolls 3 are offset [from the plane of the axes of the back-up rolls, and are adjustable by hydraulic pistons 8 so that they can be offset on either side for reversible rolling.
