946,993. Coating paper webs. COMBINED LOCKS PAPER CO. March 27, 1961 [April 14, 1960], No. 11063/61. Heading D1L. A method of coating a web of paper 10 with a smooth coating comprises passing the web through the nip of a pair of coating rolls 12,14 and smoothing the coating while it is still wet by means of a roller 20. A rubber-covered roll 16 supplies coating liquid to the rubber-covered roll 14, the roll 12 having a hard surface. The roll 20 contacts the web 10 while the web still engages the roll 12, and the roll 20 runs at a faster or slower peripheral speed than the roll 12. The roll 20, which may be rubber-covered, may have a helical groove or rib on its surface to give it an axial oscillation during rotation. Both sides of the web may be coated by supplying the roll 12 with coating liquid as for the roll 14. The liquid comprises a suspension of an adhesive, e.g. starch or casein, and clay, pigment, or other minerals, in water.
