946,696. Polymerizing unsaturated polyester resins. ELEKTROCHEMISCHE WERKE MUNCHEN A.G. Feb. 28, 1961 [March 1, 1960], No. 7273/61. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C2] Tertiary-butyl per -(α-ethyl)- hexanate (see Division C2) is used as a catalyst in the polymerization of an unsaturated polyester resin mass or mixtures of unsaturated polyester resin masses, or for the copolymerization of an unsaturated polyester resin mass or mixtures thereof with an unsaturated monomeric compound. The catalyst is preferably used as a solution in a plasticizer. A cobalt compound such as cobalt octanate may be added and small quantities of an alkylated phenol may be incorporated in the unsaturated polyester resin mass to prolong the pot life. Vanadium salts may be added as accelerators. Examples describe the copolymerization of styrene with unsaturated polyester resin masses prepared from (a) butane-1,3-diol and maleic anhydride, (b) butane-1,3-diol, maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride, and (c) butane-1,3-diol, propylene glycol, malice anhydride and tetrahydrophthalic anhydride. Comparative examples are given in which benzoyl peroxide is used as catalyst. Specification 881,629 is referred to.
