Abstract

Ethylenically unsaturated compounds are polymerized at 25-160 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising a diacyl peroxide of the formula <FORM:1086405/C3/1> wherein A represents an alkyl, alkoxyalkyl or phenoxy-alkyl radical or a phenyl radical which may be substituted by an alkyl or alkoxy group, and n is 2 or 3. Examples describe the preparation of polymers from acrylonitrile, vinylacetate, styrene, methyl methacrylate and ethylene; and the hardening of a polyester resin consisting of styrene and a polyester obtained by the esterification of maleic acid and phthalic acid with propane diol.ALSO:The invention comprises diacyl peroxides of the formula <FORM:1086405/C2/1> wherein A represents an alkyl, alkoxyalkyl or a phenoxy alkyl radical or a phenyl radical which may be substituted by an alkyl or alkoxy group and n is 2 or 3. The compounds may be prepared by conventional methods, e.g. by reacting an acyl halide <FORM:1086405/C2/2> in which X is halogen, with inorganic peroxides in aqueous solution at - 15 DEG to +25 DEG C. The peroxides are used as polymerization catalysts (see Division C3). Examples relate to di-3-n-butoxy propionyl peroxide and di-3-n-hexoxypropionyl peroxide.
