Abstract

Synthetic resins are formed by mixing a polymerizable or a not fully-polymerized material and a volatile propellant under pressure in a pressure-tight container having a closable orifice opening, expelling the mixture from the container by means of the vapour pressure of the propellant and permitting the material to fully polymerize rapidly at a temperature below 150 DEG F. The container preferably also contains a polymerization inhibiting agent and an agent for activating polymerization, the activating agent being preferably maintained with a volatile propellant in a physically separate compartment from the polymerizable material. The Specification contains a list of suitable propellants. The polymerizable material may be a silane such as dimethyldichlorosilane, a tetra-alkyl titanate, an unsaturated compound such as styrene, indene, vinyl carbazole, a vinyl ether, propylene or isobutylene, a condensate of a phenol, urea or melamine and formaldehyde or furfural, a mixture of furfural and meta-cresol or furfuryl alcohol, an unsaturated alkyd resin, a polyester of a glycol, maleic anhydride and fumaric acid, a partial polymer of chloroprene, a partially polymerized epoxide resin, or a low molecular weight butadienestyrene copolymer, polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl acetate or polystyrene. In examples, the mixtures comprise (1) dimethyldichlorosilane, trichlorofluoromethane and dichlorodifluoromethane; (2) tetraisopropyl titanate, hexane and dichlorodifluoromethane; (3) styrene, tin tetrachloride and dichlorodifluoromethane; (4) polystyrene (M.wt. 2000), tin tetrachloride, trichlorofluoromethane and dichlorodifluoromethane; (5) indene, tin tetrachloride and methyl chloride; (6) cresolformaldehyde resin (M.wt. less than 5000), acetone, p-toluene sodium sulphonate, sodium bisulphate and dichlorodifluoromethane; (7) m-cresol, furfural, aluminium chloride and n-butane; (8) polyester of ethylene glycol and maleic anhydride, cobalt naphthenate, potassium persulphate, dichlorodifluoromethane and methyl isopropyl ketone; (9) polychloroprene (M.wt. 2000), benzoyl peroxide, potassium persulphate, carbon monoxide, n-butane and acetone; and (10) epoxide resin (M.wt. 1000), methyl ethyl ketone, monoethanolamine and dichlorodifluoromethane.ALSO:Coatings are produced by the application to surfaces of synthetic resins formed by mixing a polymerizable or a not fully polymerized material and a volatile propellant under pressure in a pressure-tight container having a closable orifice opening, expelling the mixture from the container by means of the vapour pressure of the propellant and permitting the material to fully polymerize rapidly at a temperature below 150 DEG F. (see Group IV (a)). Examples of compositions which produce coatings are (a) tetraisopropyl titanate, hexane and dichlorodifluoromethane, (b) indene, tin tetrachloride and methyl chloride, (c) m-cresol, furfural, aluminium chloride and n-butane, (d) polyester of ethylene glycol and maleic anhydride, cobalt naphthenate, potassium persulphate, dichlorodifluoromethane and methyl isopropyl ketone, (e) polychloroprene (M. wt. about 2000), benzoyl peroxide, potassium persulphate, carbon monoxide, n-butane and acetone and (f) epoxide resin (M. wt. 1000), methyl ethyl ketone, monoethanolamine and dichlorodifluoromethane. The use of organic tetra-esters of titanium, as in (a) above, produces polymeric titanium dioxide films.
