Abstract

Resinous materials are produced by polymerizing a solution of a plurality of furane monomers and a thermoplastic resin component, the resin component being other than one based on a furane monomer and being capable of reacting or remaining dissolved when the solution is polymerized. Specified furane monomers are furfuryl alcohol and aldehyde. The resins include polyvinyl formal and butyral, polyvinyl acetate and lignin. The solution may be stored for an indefinite time and is polymerized by adding an acid hardener, e.g. orthophosphoric acid. This may be added in solution in, for example, methyl ethyl ketone, methylated spirit or furfuryl aldehyde itself. In the latter case, the solution of resin may contain only the furfuryl alcohol. If the proportion of alcohol to aldehyde is less than 2 or 3 to 1, the final product is soft; hard, tough products are obtained when the proportion is between 1 and 4 to 1. The solutions containing hardener may be used to form water-repellant coatings and adhesives or sheets and moulded articles. Felt and other materials may also be impregnated with the solution before or after adding the hardener. Hardening is accelerated by heat, of the order of 85 DEG C.
