Abstract

The water-solubility of polyvinyl alcohol is reduced by incorporating therewith a hardenable phenol-formaldehyde resin and then hardening the resin. The polyvinyl alcohol may result from partially or wholly hydrolysing polymers or interpolymers of vinyl esters. The phenol-formaldehyde resin may be aqueous, spirit-soluble or cold-setting. The compositions may be in the form of aqueous emulsions and may comprise solvents, e.g. acetone and alcohol, plasticizers, e.g. ethylene glycol, glycerol, mono- and di-acetin, tri-b -chloroethyl-phosphate and glyceryl adipate, dyes, pigments and fillers. They may be made into films, threads, tubes, moulded articles and coating compositions. In examples: (1) polyvinyl alcohol is mixed with an aqueous phenolformaldehyde resin solution, dried and the resulting powder moulded into discs; (2) polyvinyl alcohol powder is mixed with an alcoholic solution of a resin made by refluxing phenol (4 mols.) and formaldehyde solution (6 mols.) in the presence of aqueous ammonia, the mixture dried and similarly moulded; (3) powdered polyvinyl alcohol is dissolved in water at 65 DEG to 70 DEG C. and diacetin and an aqueous phenol-formaldehyde resin solution added and the mixture spread on a fabric in a plurality of coats and heated at 145 DEG C.; (4) films prepared by emulsifying a phenol-formaldehyde resin and glycerol in an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol are first dried and then heated at 145 DEG C.
