Abstract

A coating composition comprises an intimate mixture or reaction product of a polymer of vinyl acetate with from 3 to 10%, based on the weight of said polymer, of a water soluble amino aldehyde condensation product which is curable to the insoluble infusible resinous state. The amino aldehyde condensate is preferably melamine formaldehyde, but also suitable are condensation products of guanidine, urea or thiourea with formaldehyde, acetaldehyde or propionaldehyde. The composition can be applied to solid surfaces or textiles, and is particularly suitable for impregnating paper matting to give a floor mat. The film is made infusible by heating to 120 DEG to 170 DEG C. Examples describe compositions of (1) water dispersed melamine-formaldehyde resin and polyvinyl acetate emulsion, mixed together in water; (2) polyvinyl acetate emulsion, china clay, red iron oxide, water-dispersed melamine formaldehyde resin and a polyester plasticiser.
