Abstract

945,624. Heating and cooling systems. G. S. MINICH. Feb. 19, 1962 [Feb. 17, 1961], No. 6822/62. Heading F4U. [Also in Division F1] In a heating or cooling system utilizing a circulating liquid, a liquid-vapour emulsion or a liquid containing a gas or solid material, a fluid transfer device is provided between zones of differing pressure (due for example, to differences in elevation in a space heating or cooling installation), the device acting to counterbalance the liquid pressure in the flow and return lines of the zone and at the same time permitting the flow of liquid from one zone to another. The system shown for cooling a mine includes a pump 9, a heat exchanger 10 in which the circulating liquid is cooled and which may comprise the evaporator of a refrigerating system, a heat exchanger 11 in which the circulating liquid cools air passing to the mine. The fluid transfer device includes chambers 3, 6 separated by a flexible diaphragm 2, one-way valves 4, 5 and control valves 7, 8. With the valves 7, 8 in the position shown, movement of diaphragm 3 to the left draws fluid from zone A into chamber 6 and replaces it by fluid from chamber 3. Valves 7 and 8 are now actuated so that valve 7 is closed and valve 8 opened. Movement of diaphragm 2 to the right will now force fluid from chamber 6 into zone B of the circuit and at the same time fluid from that zone will be drawn into chamber 3. Hence movement of valves 7 and 8 and diaphragm causes fluid to be circulated from one zone to the other and thus through the system. The fluid transfer device may serve also as a pump, the pump 9 then being omitted. In practice the system comprises several of the zones served by a plurality of the transmitting devices connected in series or in parallel to provide a continuous circulation of the fluid. In a space heating system described (Fig. 2, not shown) the fluid transfer device comprises a piston, the return movement of which is acuated by a spring, the fluid control valves being controlled by solenoids and an electrical timing mechanism.
