Abstract
993,338. Heating and cooling systems; refrigerating; cooling towers; tube type heat exchangers; surface condensers. A. I. McFARLAN. April 30, 1963 [May 23, 1962], No. 19644/63. Headings F4H, F4K, F4S and F4U. The invention relates to a heat extraction system 35 which as described, forms part of an air conditioning system in which refrigerating units 10, 11, 12 supply heat or cold (according to requirements using valves 21, 22, 23) to a system 13 which includes heat transfer coils 17, 18, 19. The system 35 according to the invention includes a cooling tower 3 containing a packing 41 on to which water is sprayed and thereby cooled, the tower also containing heatsensitive elements 65 adapted to cause water to be supplied to the tower in the event of a fire therein; e.g. during winter when the tower is not in use. The system 13 includes a section 15 passing through the evaporator 10c, 11c, 12c of the refrigerating units, and a section 16 passing through the condensers 11b, 12b only, of these units. The condensers 11b, 12b are adapted to be traversed also by water in the heat extraction system 35 and if the fluid temperature in the section 16 rises unduly, a thermally sensitive element 56 operates the pump 36 to bring the cooling tower circuit into operation. Pump 36 is also actuated by the thermally sensitive elements 65 within the tower in the event of a fire as mentioned above.
