Abstract
1466980 Heating liquids in bulk; refrigeration A S CROMARTY 21 May 1975 [19 June 1974] 27069/74 Headings F4A F4H and F4S A generally upright fluid-storage vessel 2 (in use enclosed by thermal insulation, not shown) has, in thermal association with the vessel wall, duct means in the form of a non- linear helical passage through which a heating fluid is circulated to heat the fluid (e.g. water) stored in the vessel, the vessel having a length to maximum width ratio of not less than 2 : 1. The duct means may comprise a non-linear helical coil 14, 15 wound around the vessel; or the duct means may be fabricated as an integral part of the vessel wall. The vessel has a fluid inlet 10 and outlets 11, 12 and may also incorporate a thermostatically controlled immersion heater. The heating fluid may comprise refrigerant vapour wherein the duct means encircling the vessel 2 comprises the heat rejecting element (i.e. condenser) of a refrigerating system such as that shown wherein refrigerant from the evaporator 7 is preheated in a heat exchanger 5 (by the condensate of the system) before compression at 1 and delivery to the upper portion 14 of the duct system encircling the vessel 2. The fluid in the upper part of the vessel is thereby heated. Refrigerant condensate passes from the coil portion 15 to the liquid receiver 4 of the system via a further condenser 3 cooled by a fan 8 switched on when the pressure in the system is sufficiently high to actuate means such as a pressure switch 9.
