Abstract
1396293 Thermal storage heaters; central heating systems; cooling buildings J E RANDELL 2 May 1972 [10 Feb 1971 1 April 1971] 4335/71 and 8438/71 Headings F4U and F4H A thermal storage apparatus is used directly or indirectly as the heat or cold source of a forced, warm or cold air system, or hot or cold liquid system for heating or cooling a building by the use of a refrigeration system of the absorption or compression type, which latter may be used as a heat pump. In a simplified form, a thermal storage vessel 1 containing a freezable liquid, e.g. water and an immersion heating element 2, also houses the evaporator 3 of a compression refrigeration system formed by a compressor 5, a heat exchanger coil 6 and restrictor 7. Flow of liquid from the vessel to a heat exchanger 4 is controlled by valves 8, 9. The heat exchangers 4 and 6 are parallelly arranged for air to be blown thereover by a fan 11. During the heating cycle heat is extracted from the vessel until the liquid therein is at ambient temperature and the compressor is operated and used as a refrigerator extracting further heat including the latent heat of fusion of the water on freezing. The ice is then melted and the water heated by the heater 2. If cooling is required, the water is frozen overnight by the refrigeration system, and the heat exchanger 4 with or without the fan 11 will extract heat from ambient air during the day. Many embodiments are described including additional heating elements, either an electric heater element or a further heat-exchanger, incorporated in the vessel. Air passages may be formed within the vessel and the freezable liquid may be mounted in pockets surrounded by heat transfer medium. Many examples of salt hydrates added to the water are described as are polyethylene oxide and solids of high thermal conductivity. Specification 1,396,292 is referred to.
