Abstract

1277482 Refrigerating CARRIER CORP 3 Sept 1969 [18 Dec 1968 (2)] 43659/69 Heading F4H An absorption refrigeration system comprises a generator 10, a condenser 11, an evaporator 15 and an absorber 12, and a duct or ducts 100 connecting an absorbent solution sump 52 and a refrigeration sump 85 in order that at low ambient absorber temperatures, additional refrigerant vapour is absorbed in the absorber 12 whereupon excess absorbent solution overflows from sump 52 into sump 85, so that the vapour pressure of the refrigerant is lowered and its evaporation temeperature increased. As the ambient absorber temperature rises, this process is reversed, contaminated refrigerant flowing from sump 85 to sump 52 and thence to the generator 10. Cooled refrigerant is pumped from sump 85 through an air cooling heat exchanger 18. In a heating cycle of the system, valves 107 and 111 are opened and pumps 29, 54 inoperative, a mixture of refrigerant and absorbent solution being heated in generator 10 and flowing through ducts 60, 115, 88 to heat exchanger 18 and back to the generator and through ducts 28, 110, 100, 88 to the heat exchanger 18. The evaporator 15 may be adiabatic, or may include a heat exchanger. Separate heat exchangers 18 for heating and cooling air may be provided. The sumps 85, 52 may be integral with evaporator 15 and absorber 12 respectively. The or each duct 100 may include a valve. The condenser 11 and absorber 12 are water or air cooled. An additive such as 2-ethyl-n-hexanol is added to the absorbent solution, and overlies the heated absorbent solution in a liquid trap 62 during the heating cycle of the system.
