Abstract

1,126,496. Refrigerating. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 18 Oct., 1966 [19 Nov., 1965], No. 46445/66. Heading F4H. [Also in Division G3] The expansion valve 14 of a compressioncondensation system is controlled during normal operation by the pressure and temperature of liquid leaving the condenser 11. The expansion valve is operated by a piston provided with a bleed opening and moving in a chamber 26 under the influence of the pressure of liquid refrigerant admitted from the liquid line 12 at 20 in such manner that increased pressure on the piston moves the expansion valve in the opening direction. Valves 21 and 23 are operated by cold gas pressure on diaphragms in chambers 39 and 30 and under normal operation are open and closed respectively. A solenoid valve 25 is held open whenever the compressor C is energized by a thermostatic switch TS. Thus under normal conditions the expansion valve is controlled by a valve 22 operated by a diaphragm in a chamber 41 the sides of which are in communication with a temperature sensing bulb 51 and with liquid in line 12 in such manner that increased liquid pressure tends to open the valve 22 and thus to increase the opening of the expansion valve and that increased temperature in the condenser outlet tends to close the valve 22 and thus to decrease the opening of the expansion valve to cause back-up of liquid in the condenser to increase the cooling action of the latter. If the evaporator becomes starved, the valve 23 opens under the action of decreased pressure in the line 17, thereby by-passing the valve 22 and causing the expansion valve to open further. If evaporator pressure increases unduly, valve 21 moves in the closing direction, thereby decreasing the opening of the expansion valve. The expansion valve control may be incorporated in a reversible cycle system.
