Abstract
945,446. Connecting-rods. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Feb. 23, 1962 [Feb. 27, 1961], No. 7100/62. Heading F2T. [Also in Division F1] A connecting-rod 19, secured by a gudgeonpin 27, to an I.C. engine or compressor piston 11 and slidable on the bearing journal 17 of a crankshaft 16, is rotatable to a limited extent about the gudgeon pin axis but is restrained from significant movement along that axis in at least one direction by engagement with the piston. The connecting-rod 19 may form part of an I.C. engine having opposed horizontal cylinders and has a forked big end 21 in which nests the plain big end 29 of a connecting-rod 28 secured by a pin 34 to an opposed piston. The connecting-rods are rotatably supported on a common two-part bearing 36, 37 rotatably mounted on the crank-shaft 16 and are centred on the crank-shaft by machined faces on both sides of the small end 23 of the rod 19 engaging with a running fit corresponding faces on the gudgeon pin bosses 26 in the piston 11. Alternatively, each of the opposite machined faces 44, 46 on the connecting-rods 19, 28, respectively engages a gudgeon pin boss face in its respective piston.
