In an M-type travelling wave tube the interaction space is arcuate in form, the delay device 11, 13 and the sole electrode 3 being respectively in the form of two coaxial structures with the delay device 11, 13 constituting the outer of these structures, the sole 3 is in the form of at least the major portion of a ring and is mounted around a first support structure 19 on which a first conical locating surface 20 is formed accurately coaxial with the outer curved surface of the sole 3, the delay device is constituted by a pair of intercalated comb like structures 11, 13 the innermost faces of the teeth of which lie in a circular cylindrical surface, the teeth of a first of the comb like structures are formed integral with a second support structure 12, and the sole is accurately located with respect to the first comb like structure 11 by virtue of the first locating surface 20 mating with a second conical locating surface 21 formed on the second support structure 12 accurately coaxial with the innermost faces of the teeth 11 of the first comb like structure, the first support structure being at least partly formed of an electrical insulating material 23 whereby the sole 3 is electrically insulated from the second support structure 12. Insulator 23 is of alumina based ceramic and is metallised and brazed to sole 3 and cup 19. The sole has grooves to reduce secondary emission 25 is a water cooling channel for the delay line. In manufacture members 11, 21 and 3, 20 are turned in a single operation. Metal plate 14 is secured to block 2 by screws, then brazed to the block. Next the assembly of 3, 23 and 19 is inserted to mate the conical surfaces 20, 21. The device is a backward wave oscillator which has an output coaxial line at the gun end of the tube and a lossy coating on teeth 11, 13 at the other end of the delay line.
