Abstract

1,134,424. Discharge tubes. ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO. Ltd. 31 March, 1967 [9 May, 1966], No. 20403/66. Heading H1D. In a microwave electron beam tube in which the interaction section is insulated from the collector section by a gap, radiation from the gap is suppressed by a shunt capacitor having a solid dielectric and electrodes which are disposed outside the envelope of the tube and encircle the tube in the neighbourhood of the gap. In the klystron shown, the collector 3 is separated from the remainder of the tube body 2 by a gap 5 and a ceramic envelope section 6 secured between two annular metal members 7 and 8. The capacitor is constituted by annular metal plates 12 and 13 separated by dielectric 14, plate 12 having a cylindrical portion 12B fixed to the periphery of metal member 9, and plate 13 having a similar cylindrical portion which contacts a coiled metal spring 11 seated in a groove in the periphery of metal member 10. In a modified structure (Fig. 3, not shown), the cylindrical portion of the capacitor is lengthened, and the annular portion is dispensed with. The application to a travelling wave tube is also referred to.
