Abstract
1398428 Klystrons ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO Ltd 19 Sept 1973 [11 Oct 1972] 46751/72 Heading H1D The escape of radiation from a klystron in which an insulating envelope portion separates the final drift tube 1 from the collector 2 is reduced by the inclusion of a transmission line, short-circuited for h.f. at its outer end, dimensioned to correspond in electrical length to an integral number of half wavelengths at the centre frequency of the working band, and with the dielectric of a substantial portion of its physical length constituted partially by the insulating envelope portion and partially by the vacuum within the klystron, the two portions of the dielectric extending side-by-side in the direction of wave propagation, whereby to permit dimensioning of the electrical length of the transmission line, without affecting its physical length, to ensure that it does not approximate to an odd number of quarter wavelengths of any frequency inside the operating bandwidth ferromagnetic envelope portion 7 forming part of the focusing system, and is separated from the collector 2 by a ceramic annulus 8 hermetically sealed therebetween. A deformable metal annulus 16 forms with the adjacent parts a folded radial transmission line TL shown by the dashed line, which line is started at its outer end by a capacitor formed by a layer of insulating tape separating a metal coating M on the outer surface of the ceramic annulus and the metal ring 10 which retains the annulus in position. During manufacture, the metal member 16 is bent to alter the ratio of vacuum to ceramic dielectric in the transmission line to the desired value. In an alternative non-adjustable, embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) member 16 is replaced by a metal coating (M<SP>1</SP>) extending on the inner surface of the annulus 8 for a short distance inwards from its outer periphery. Both the collector and the drift tube have cooling water jackets W, W<SP>1</SP>, and the collector periphery has a cap 3 to reduce the escape of secondary electrons.
