Abstract

A structure comprises two or more layers of inorganic, non-metallic, fibres having a metallic coating, the layers being contained in superimposed parallel planes and the fibres of each layer being arranged in laterally spaced apart relationship and having their longitudinal areas disposed at an angle to the longitudinal axes of fibres in adjacent layers, the fibres being joined together by fusion of the metallic coating at the points of contact of the fibres with adjacent fibres. In a particular embodiment inorganic fibres 10, such as silica, are provided with coatings 12 of metal such as aluminium and several sheets of such fibres, each arranged with the longitudinal axes of the fibres parallel, are arranged on top of one another with their longitudinal axes arranged at right angles to each other. Heat is applied to the superimposed sheets as that fusion of the metal coating occurs at points of contact between adjacent sheets of fibres to form a block-like structure. Alternatively the coating may be formed of two or more layers of different metals.
