Abstract

944,195. Gas turbine plant. A. P. PEDRICK. Aug. 2, 1962, No. 29671/62. Heading F1G. An intermittent combustion type of gas turbine engine comprises a fixed housing O having a number of radial bores in which are disposed plungers F which are urged radially inwardly by means of springs L, the plungers at their radially outer ends being connected to shafts J on which are mounted rollers K, the rollers K engaging the peripheral surfaces of cam plates P and Q. The cam plates are secured to a rotor member R whereby as the rotor and cam plates rotate the plungers are caused to reciprocate in their bores. Air is supplied to the engine by means of a fan A and fuel is injected into the air stream through injectors B, the air/ fuel mixture passing through ducts D in the rotor R and so into the bores in the fixed housing O. The mixture in each bore is compressed as the piston moves radially inwardly, see Fig. 2, and is fired either spontaneously or by a spark ignition device and the combustion gases then discharge through ducts H in the rotor R which is thereby caused to rotate. The gases then discharge on to the blades T and V of a useful power turbine rotor S and finally pass to exhaust. The rotor S drives the fan A and the useful load. The radially inward loading of the plungers F by the springs L may be assisted or replaced by series of circular springs N. The invention is stated to be particularly suitable for use in motor vehicles. Specifications 347,206 and 922,386 are referred to.
