A charge of suitable material 8 is vaporized and diffuses, assisted by the gas flow from source 4, to the cooled end 5. The fibre supported on cradle 7 is positioned, preferably when stable conditions exist in the tube, so that crystals grow on the fibre. The fibre may be initially located in the heated part of the tube to prevent premature crystallization.
