Abstract

943,708. Expanding-wheel gear. FICHTEL & SACHS A.G. Oct. 31, 1961 [Nov. 17, 1960], No. 38973/61. Heading F2D. An expanding pulley is adjusted by torque responsive means irrespective of the direction of torque transmission. As shown in Fig. 2, pulley halves 5, 6 are rotatably mounted on a shaft 10, half 5 being axially fixed and half 6 being urged towards the other half by a spring 11. Projections 8 of the half 5 extend through slots 17 in the half 6 to provide a driving connection therebetween, and levers 7 having forked parts are pivotally mounted on the projections 8. The shaft 10 has radial arms 9 extending between the forked parts of the levers, and a cam part of each lever bears against a plate 12 against which the spring 11 reacts. The levers 7 are rotatably adjusted, according to the torque transmitted and act to move the plate 12 axially and thus vary the loading of the spring 11 so as to adjust the pulley half 6. In the embodiment of Fig. 5, the pulley halves 5, 6 are drivingly connected by projections 15, 16 on the half 5 which are axially slidable in slots 17 in the half 6, and the spring 11 reacts against a plate 14 which also has projections entering the slots 17. The driven shaft has radial arms 13 co-operating with cam recesses in the plate 14, the arms riding out of the recesses with increasing torque to force the plate axially and thus increase the force of the spring 11 urging the pulley halves together. In both embodiments the pulley 5, 6 forms the driven pulley of a V-belt gear having a driving expanding pulley adjusted by a spring or by a speed-responsive device.
