Abstract
943,358. Fitting circlips to shafts. MINING ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Oct. 26, 1962 [Oct. 31, 1961], No. 38836/61. Heading B4C. Means for fitting a circlip to a shaft comprises a table 10 having an opening 12 through which a shaft can be passed, a peg 13 fixed in the table to receive one end of the circlip and a peg 14 adapted to receive the other end of the circlip and carried by a member 16 which is movable in a direction to open the circlip by a compressed air actuated piston-and-cylinder device 24, 25, 26. The peg 13 is mounted in a block 15 secured to the table and the peg 14 to the member 16 in the form of a bar connected to a plate 22 via a pin-and-slot device 19, 21. The plate is slidable on the table and connected to the piston-rod 24, an opening being provided in the plate so that, in the inoperative position shown, a shaft may be withdrawn through the opening 12. The bar 16 is urged by a spring 17 against a distance piece 18 abutting the block 15, thereby accurately setting the distance between the holes in the ends of the circlip. In operation, a circlip is first located in the pegs 13, 14, compressed air then being admitted to the cylinder 26 so that the plate is moved to the right. During the initial movement of the plate, lugs 23 formed thereon move over the surface of the circlip thereby maintaining it flat, continued movement causing one end of the slot 21 to engage the pin 19 and thus move the bar 16 to expand the circlip. A shaft is then inserted through the opening 12 to rest on a support 31, the latter being adjusted to bring a groove formed in the shaft into alignment with the circlip. The supply of compressed air is then cut-off and the piston returned by a spring 28 to thereby allow the circlip to contract into the groove. The table 10 may be arranged in a vertical instead of a parallel plane.
