In drafting-mechanism the top rolls are so mounted on a holding rail extending transversely to the bottom rolls below the drafting field that the positions of the top rolls can be adjusted relatively to the bottom rolls in the direction in which the sliver is fed. In preferred forms the top rolls are in pairs joined by a neck with bearing-rings 5<1>, Fig. 4 with a groove 5<11> between them, the weighting being magnetic. In Fig. 1, brackets 7 are secured by bolts 6 in chosen positions in slots marked with graduations in rails 3 located according to the positions of the drafting stations on a common rail 1. The brackets each have two webs 9, 10 supporting bearing members 11, those, 10, on the feed side being resilient, and those, 19, on the delivery side being rigid. The bearing members 11 support a top roll either by being shaped to engage over the rings and in the grooves or by means of rollers 12 Fig. 4. Members 11 may take the form of a spring with a finger engaging the groove 5<11>, and webs 9 may detachably support clearer rollers, flats or scrapers profiled to engage the rims and groove, or apronsupports with guide lugs and a tensioning-spring. In Fig. 16, the brackets are formed as feet 20 bent over to embrace the rail 3 and each carrying a web 21 supporting the roll by a spring bail 23, Fig. 13, and a dished bearing-member 22 or a spring lug 21<11> Fig. 16 engaging the groove 5. Feet for webs supporting adjacent rolls may be . secured one above the other. The webs may also carry upper and lower apron guide-means 26, 24, Fig. 16, for adjacent drafting-stations by means of central portions with U-shaped extensions 28, 28<1> embracing the web, the lower section being secured by a screw 29. In the case of the upper section 26, the upper U-parts 28<1> engage the web with more clearance than do the lower U-parts 28, permitting the section to tilt resiliently toward the lower one under the influence of a spring 31 according to the setting of an adjustable stop 30. The tilting may be effected by a leaf-spring between the web and the guide-means. The webs may also carry clearer rollers &c. urged magnetically or by springs towards the upper and lower rollers. The members 11 in Fig. 1 may engage over the top rolls and they and the webs 9, 10 may be drawn downwardly inside the brackets by spring, weight, pneumatic or hydraulic means.
