Abstract
In the moulding of glass, a ring mould assembly, for co-operation with an upper rim surface of a base mould, comprises a ring mould connected to a ring adapter and a plurality of upper spring bolts between the ring adapter and a plunger, the ring mould being flexible and caused to conform to variations in the upper rim surface of the base mould by a plurality of lower spring bolts between the ring adapter and the ring mould. The ring mould 17 is made from cast ductile iron to conform with slight variations in the upper rim surface 13 of a base mould 10, due to the heat of the molten glass on the upper surface 11 thereof, the mould 17 forming the upper edge of an article, such as the upper part of a television tube, when the glass <PICT:0943306/C1/1> is pressed by a plunger 15. The mould 17 is supported from the ring adapter 21 by spring bolts 19, 30, the ring adapter being indirectly supported from the upper plate 25 of the plunger 15 by spring bolts 18, 28, thereby allowing the plunger 15 to move slightly out of the mould 10 before the ring mould 17 is raised. Connection between the ring adapter 21 and plate 25 is through a plate 26, to which the bolts 28 are secured, and a plurality of bolts 29, the adapter 21 being pressed downwardly from plate 26 by studs 23. For ease of replacement, the studs 23 are secured to a false plate 24 secured by bolts 27 to the plate 26.
