943,149. Knitting machines. GEB SCHELLER TEXTILMASCHINENFABRIK G.m.b.H. May 16, 1961 [July 22, 1960], No. 17814/61. Heading D1C. In a straight-bar ribs knitting machine, the heads of the machine needles 4 are supported on one or more rigid elements, entirely independent of the machine needles 4 and behind the frame needles. As shown, Figs. 1 and 4, the supporting element comprises a part 5 having teeth on its edge between which fit teeth on a part 51 slidable on part 5 either to form the surface 5a or to project beyond part 5. Parts 5, 5<1> are operated from cams on main shaft 8 and support the machine needle heads during pressing. The frame needles are pressed by an edge 2 on the sinker head 2, gaps 2<11> being provided on this edge so that selected needles are not pressed. In another arrangement, Fig. 8, interfitting toothed elements 14, 14<1> are independently vertically slidable under the control of cams on shaft 8 and form a horizontal surface 14a to support the machine needles. In a further modification, Fig. 10, a bar 21 is secured to the sinker head. A presser comprising two independently operated parts 23a, 23b is provided.
