A slider for a sliding clasp fastener having coupling elements 5 coupled and uncoupled by the slider, comprises an internal channel 13 bounded by wings 8, 9 through which the coupling elements pass, a locking member 16 mounted on one wing and movable into locking engagement with the coupling elements, and a resilient member 23, mounted on the other wing and projecting through an aperture 21 in that wing into the channel 13, the resilient member 23 yieldably retaining the locking member 16 and coupling elements 5 in locking engagement and being adapted to yield when a force sufficiently large to cause risk of damage to the fastener, is applied to the fastener in a direction tending to move the coupling elements relative to the slider in the fastener-opening direction, the channel being sufficiently large to permit the coupling elements to move out of locking engagement with the locking member and to run through the channel past the locking member in its locking position. As shown, the locking member 16, which may be part of a pull member, is pivoted on the wing 8 and includes a cam portion 19 which co-operates with a leaf spring 15 for holding the locking member in or out of the locking position, and a prong 20 which projects through an aperture 12 to engage the coupling elements. The member 23 may be retained by a swaging operation, in the case of metal sliders or by a hot pressing operation in the case of sliders of plastics material. In another arrangement, Fig. 6 (not shown) the member is retained by a separated plate positioned over the aperture 21. In a further arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown) the member 23 is secured at one end only. The invention is applicable to sliders in which the prong 20 is replaced by a cam portion.
