In a ring twisting machine in which each ring holder 2 may be detached from the traverse rail 1 and lowered on a guide rod 5 to a position in which a full package on the associated spindle may be doffed, inter co-operating catch members 647 are provided on the traverse rail and ring holder respectively, one of the members e.g. member 7 being displaceable against resilient means e.g. a spring 9 to a disengaged position so that the holder may be lowered, while in the engaged position shown in Fig. 3 the catch members react so as to press the holder 2 against the rail 1. In the form shown, rotation of a cam 10 by a handle 11 displaces plate member 7 to disengage the ring holder so that it may be lowered to its doffing position. When a new former is placed on the spindle a transfer tail may be wound thereon by raising the ring holder to an intermediate position. This is effected by rotation of the handle 11 so that a lever 17 normally spring urged against the underside of the ring holder is rotated by an arm 15 and pin 16 on the lever 11 to bear against a fixed member in the machine frame and raise the holder to its intermediate position. The transfer tail is then wound. The ring holder is next fully raised into engagement with the traverse rail. A carriage 3 which is provided on the ring holder 2 to guide it on the rod 5, has two upstanding pins (not shown) engageable in a member mounted on the traverse rail to locate the holder in its engaged position.
