Abstract

In a wound dressing comprising an absorbent layer and a wound-contacting layer the latter consists of a fibre fleece compressed so as to have a felt-like structure and embossed to give absorbent and non-absorbent areas and additionally partially coated with a metal. The metal, which may be aluminium or silver may be applied to the fleece by sputtering or spraying or it may be a powder in a synthetic resin coating applied by roller to the raised areas of the embossed pattern. The absorbent backing layer may be attached to the wound-contacting layer by an embossing process and may be further secured to it around the edges by any suitable method. In addition the outermost layer may be rendered moisture-repellent by being impregnated such as with paraffin wax emulsion. Specification 822,534 is referred to.
